    Communication Engineering
The Department of Communication Engineering, based on former disciplines (Signal and Information Processing, Communication and Information System) in the Department of Electronics Science and Engineering NJU and NJU Institute of Communication Technology, jointly established with China Electronics Technology Group Corporation No. 14 Research Institute, is an important strategic move to develop application-oriented discipline in NJU, which is supported by  211 Program  and  985 Program  . 
The department covers first level discipline  Information and Communication Engineering  with undergraduate, master’s training system for communication engineering and master’s, doctoral training system for signal and information processing. Apart from teaching laboratories for communication theories, it has labs for wide band communication networks and ITS, secure multimedia communication, radar signal processing and intelligent information processing. To add up, combining the strengths in science in NJU, learning schooling pattern about high-tech applied discipline from world-class universities and following the advanced technology at home and abroad, the department gradually forms its characteristic of constructing discipline to cultivate innovative personnel. 
Currently, the department has a dominant integrated teaching team from subjects like communication, computer, electronics technology and information technology, including 5 professors, 6 associate professors and 4 doctor lecturers. Our teaching content is of distinctive characteristics of current time. For example, the    Modern data communication course  is awarded the National University excellent teaching material of eleventh five-year plan. What’s more, our students, with solid foundation and strong practical innovative ability, won first prize or second prize in National Undergraduate Electronic Competition and embedded electronic contest contest for many times. 
The department has undertaken projects including National Major Projects, 863 Program, 973 Program, NSFC and Defense industry, which not only won numerous awards but also resulted in remarkable social and economic benefits. 
Major Research Direction: 
Wide Band Communication Networks and ITS
The wide band communication networks and ITS involves: optimization of wide band private network and access network design, which includes heterogeneous network convergence, cross-platform system processing, network optimization and management, communication protocol conversion, soft switching and advanced signaling, mobile self-organization network, adaptive coded modulation, multiple antenna, OFDM, limited feedback, cross-layer resource allocation, etc. ; network video transmission and processing, which mainly includes sports video detection, image deflection decoding , environmental image detection, image multidimensional formation and reduction, etc. ; ITS intelligent transportation, which includes access to special network and sections network in the highway, vehicle motion detection, environmental detection for visibility and other disaster weather, statistical distribution of road traffic parameters, GIS information release window, ITS standard establishment, etc. . 

In recent years, we have undertaken over 30 projects including National Major Project, 863 Program, NSFC and provincial scientific projects, among which there are major projects about 4G and pollution detection of Taihu Lake, the undertaking “study for traffic sensor network technology system and application framework in Jiangsu Province”. Furthermore, the “DMDU series of intelligent transportation system”, with independent intellectual property rights and international advanced level, is leading the  highway information construction in our country. Up to now, we have got 4 provincial technology progress awards and over 20 national patents. 
Radar Signal Processing
The research includes synthetic aperture radar imaging, inverse synthetic aperture radar imaging, ultra-wide band phased array signal processing, target recognition, radar anti-jamming, radar receiver automatically test and weather radar signal processing, etc. . 
Proved by the field data , we greatly improved the quality of radar target image by using any group-delay compensation method to achieve the focusing process, substituted range alignment and phase compensation. Our ultra-wide band passive phased array technology solves the dispersion problem of ultra-wide band phased array. We use multi-feature weighting recognize technology to improve the radar target recognition rate. We work out interference signal automatic detection, adaptive signal suppression method, which effectively overcome the VHF radar interference from communication. In addition, our radar receiver automatic testing systems have been used in the development, manufacture process and maintenance of radar systems, The weather radar we invented with others has play an important role in meteorology security works in Beijing Olympic Games. 
Secure Multimedia Communication
The multimedia network technology means for text data, graphics data, remote sensing sample, application software, voice, video, virtual reality, interactive control information and other media content, using sensor networks, radio stations, mobile networks, satellite links, microwave relay , high-altitude relay, telephone networks, local area networks, digital leased line, DSL access network, FHC access networks, fiber optic networks, fixed Mobile Convergence, the Internet and other means of communication means, to achieve non-real-time data transfer, one-way real-time delivery, two-way real-time interaction and other multimedia application technology. Multimedia network technology is a one of the hottest technology in current network application area. 

   The research contents include: modern communication network theory, which includes security analysis, operational control, performance analysis and improvement of wide band communication networks, wide band broadcast networks, computer networks, etc. , as well as next-generation network technology; mobile multimedia technology, which involves power control, grading coding and decoding, seamless handoff, seamless media switching, efficient modulation techniques, location services; distributed co-processing technology, which involves distributed platforms, distributed signal reception, distributed information processing, distributed media synchronization, distributed  cognition, certification, and recognition  , distributed information security. Our research results include: Advanced Cell Network key technology patents, Advanced Cell edge switches experiment platform, DSL remote access system, USB token authentication systems, distributed antenna for mobile communication scheme, SOHO multimedia gateways, multimedia network phone system. 
Information Processing
Information processing, studying the intelligent methods and application technology of information processing, is not only closely related to signal processing, artificial intelligence, pattern recognition, computer hardware and software, sensor monitoring and control, network communications and other disciplines, but also integrated with mathematics, nonlinear science, fractal geometry, complexity science, brain science and other application disciplines.
