    Microelectronic
The Department of Microelectronics and Optoelectronics is one of the most important information optoeclectronic high-tech research base. It is based on the national key discipline  Microelectronics and Solid State Electronics  and it arranges some application basic research around the semiconductor and related materials, aiming to solve international key frontier scientific problems. At the same time, by combining micro-nano-electronics and next-generation optoelectronics technology, it actively carry out IAR cooperation. The department has provided a lot of high-quality personnel in the Microelectronics and Optoelectronic fields, and it makes a remarkable achievement in terms of team development, scientific research, laboratory construction and high-tech achievements transformation and application. 
The predecessor of Department of Microelectronics and Optoelectronics was one of the earliest Semiconductor Specialty established in China (1956) . In 1993, it was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council for the doctoral program. In 1994, it was awarded as key disciplines in Jiangsu Province. In 1998, it set up  Electronic Science and Technology  postdoctoral. In 1999, it established the station for Distinguished Professors of MOE  Changjiang Scholars Program  . In 2001, it came out in front in  Microelectronics and solid State Electronics  national key discipline academic review, while in 2007 the discipline ranked 2th. Currently, it has built up an outstanding research group including Academician Zheng Youdou, 11 full-time professors and 8 associate professors, among which there are 3  Changjiang Scholars  , 3 Outstanding Youth Fund winners, 1 MOE New Century Talent and 1  innovation group  of NSFC. In 2003, it established the Jiangsu Province key Laboratory for Optoelectronic Information Functional Materials. 
The research fields include: 
1) semiconductor heterostructure materials and devices
2) semiconductor nanostructures and nanoelectronics
3) microstructure optoelectronic materials and devices
4) microelectronic and optoelectronic applications and industrial technology
5) semiconductor spintronics
6) VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) Design
Currently, the Department of Microelectronics and Optoelectronics are undertaking a large number of frontier subjects of optoelectronic information functional materials and devices, including 863 Program, 973 Program, National Natural Science Foundation of China, as well as high-tech research projects in Jiangsu Province, prospective joint research projects of IAR, innovative talent fund and basic research programs, all of which have resulted in remarkable achievements and have a great impact around the world. Specifically, the  New semiconductor heterogeneous structure and device physics research  won second prize in the 2004 State Science and Technology Award for Natural Science; the  Orderly silicon-base controlled quantum structure constructing principle and optoelectronic properties   won second prize in the 2003 State Science and Technology Award for Natural Science; the  Strengthen the construction of curriculum, quantify research standards and train high-level innovative talents  won second prize in 2002 National Teaching Achievement Award; the  Train high-level talents of microelectronics during practical scientific research  won first prize in 2001 Jiangsu Province High Education Achievement Award. Moreover, we got 1 third prize in National Invention Award, 1 third prize in National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 fourth prize in National Natural Science Award, 11 prize in Provincial Scientific Progress Award, 69 authorized national invention patents, more than 100 items applied for patents , more than 500 SCI papers published (over 70 articles’ IF > 3) and more than 200 EI papers. At the same time, we has established long-term cooperation relations with international and Hong Kong and Taiwan famous universities by exchanging graduates and scholars and undertaking international projects together. 
As for training personnel, we are committed to developing and bringing integrated, intelligent, creative high-quality professionals. Our graduates are not only suitable for pursuing a graduate degree of microelectronics and related interdisciplinary in research institutions (currently about 1/3) , which provides a talent echelon for basic research and application research, but also good enough to take up jobs like technology development, applied research, and management in high-tech enterprises and chip design and manufacturing companies. At the moment, we have national first-class laboratories open for students, including: a 400m2 laboratory for microelectronic purification process, which is equipped with various advanced processing technology, material growth equipment such as MOCVD and more than 100 sets of material device testing equipment; a complete hardware / software environment for integrated circuit design, which is equipped with 3 high-performance servers, Synopsys, Mentor EDA tool for full set of college programs and suitable for jobs such as chip design, logic synthesis, layout design and device simulation, etc.. Trough the construction of  985 Program  and  211 Program  , the government and the university have invested over 50 million yuan in the discipline and related laboratories. The funds were used to build lots of dedicated and shared equipment and improve the environment for semiconductor optoelectronic materials and device technology research. What’s more, we helped to establish  Nanjing University Micromachining Center  , which has advanced experimental conditions. 
Serving as the major base for information and optoelectronic high-tech research in China, the Department of Microelectronics and Optoelectronics is always paying great attention to play its role to help related industries in China, especially in Jiangsu Province, with their technology progress and upgrading. In recent years, it cooperated with local enterprise to build up NJU-Yangzhou Optoelectronic Institute, and it also is a main member of  Jiangsu Province domestic chip and software industry alliance  . 
The Department of Microelectronics and Optoelectronics will persist in the development strategy of  Gakken joint, strengthen character, promote cross, seize the high point  , and cooperate with CETC No. 14 and No. 55 research institutes to achieve leapfrog development.
