    Electronic Engineering
The Department of Electronic Engineering of Nanjing University is a new kind of engineering department with the concept of  combining science and engineering  , serving as one of the major base to carry out scientific research and train personnel in fields of electronic information science and engineering technique.
1. History
Early 1950s: Under the first level discipline  Physics , Nanjing University established second level discipline  Radio Physics  . 
1981:  Radio Physics  was permitted to offer Doctor-Degree Programs. 
2002:  Radio Physics  became one of the national key disciplines. 
2003: In order to meet the needs of personnel called for rapid development of electronic and information engineering technology and the needs of the development of discipline itself, Nanjing University set up the second level discipline  Electromagnetic Field and Microwave Technology  under the first level discipline   Electronic Science and Technology  and gained its Doctor-Degree Program. 
2010: Based on the disciplines  Radio Physics  and  Electromagnetic Field and Microwave Technology  , the Department of Electronic Engineering was established. 
With the practice over fifty years, we have trained a large amount of senior personnel with electronic information science technique. And we have also taken lots of important scientific programs including 973 Program, 863 Program and National Natural Science Foundation, as well as provincial and ministerial level scientific research R & D projects and horizontal cooperation, resulting in large social and economic benefits. 
2. Development Status
Currently the department consists of two second level disciplines, namely,      Radio Physics  (also a national key discipline) and  Electromagnetic Field and Microwave Technology  . Since its setting crosses two kind of disciplines, namely,   Physics  and  Electronic Science and Technology  , the department is no doubt a  Polytechnic  multidisciplinary integrated department. 
Our department has a strong team of excellent faculties, including academician of the Chinese Academy of Science, Distinguished or Lecture Professors of   Changjiang Scholars Program  and  New Century Excellent Talents  of the Ministry of Education. They have already become the academic leaders and academic backbone in their fields. 
As for personnel training, the department has formed a complete training system from the undergraduate, master, doctor to post doctorate. In training mode, the department always focuses on basic education and emphasizes wide training mode, while at the same time, it equips itself with high-level teaching labs. With the support from the World Bank loan,  211 Program  and  985 Program  , the department has set up an international advanced basic teaching and experimental center to offer students a perfect basic experimental training environment. With all these above, the graduates are of solid theoretical foundation, strong practical ability and innovation ability, which contribute to their great jobs for the employers. 
When it comes to scientific research, the department uses fundamental theoretical methods about electronic science and physics and modern experimental technology to explore new electronic materials and find out their basic law about physical processes and electromagnetic phenomena so that it can develop new electronic devices and systems and put in practical application. At present, the department has Superconductive Electronics Research Institute (SERI) and  Laboratory for Microwave Technology (LMT) . The SERI , with high international reputation, mainly focus on the superconductive electronic devices’ application in terahertz and quantum information technology, while the LMT not only undertakes frontier research on theoretical analysis, design and application of new artificial electromagnetic materials, but also carries out comprehensive research on practical electromagnetic wave absorbing materials, contributing to Chinese national economy and the modernization of Chinese defense. Recently,  Key Laboratory for advanced control technology of electromagnetic waves  was established on the basis of the key lab in SERI. 
 
 
3. Development Goals
The department will insist on the guideline  take discipline construction as a leader, take team building as the core  , strengthen the advantage, play its characteristics, improve its content, strive to develop new disciplinary growing points and continuously improve the educational level, making it a high-level electronic and information science technology personnel training and research base with larger international impact.
